Abstract

|
The objective of the present study was to analyze the effects of college students¡¯ perfectionism on their interpersonal competence and to find how such perfectionism could mediate their interpersonal competence by means of internalized shame. A total of 619 college students were selected in the metropolitan area as subjects of this study and a structural equation model was used to process the data gathered from the survey. The major outcomes of the study could be summarized as follows: first, college students¡¯ perfectionism was found to have no negative influence on their interpersonal competence; second, college students¡¯ perfectionism exercised positive influence on their internalized sense of shame; third, college students¡¯ internalized sense of shame had negative effect upon their interpersonal competence; and fourth, college students¡¯ perfectionism turned out to fully mediate their internalized sense of shame, affecting thus their Interpersonal competence negatively. This means that college students¡¯ perfectionism would not have negative impact upon their interpersonal competence directly but could exercise negative effect on their interpersonal competence just by affecting first their internalized sense of shame which in turn, as a mediator, could exercise a negative impact on their interpersonal competence. On the basis of the study, practical intervention measures were discussed here with an aim to promote the mental health of the college students.
